The Science Behind It All
Emetophobia, just like any other anxiety disorder, can be caused my numerous of things. Such as stress, traumatic life events, brain chemistry, genetics, environmental factors, depression, or physical illness.
In response to stress, traumatic life events, etc., your brain will create a fear response to protect you. When you have a panic attack, that's just your brain's way of making sure you stay safe! It's normal to panic at things like crime scenes, nightmares, when a loved one is in a hospital, etc. But there is a fine line between normal stress, anxiety, panic, anxiety disorders, and abnormal stress and panic.
Phobias are usually diagnosed after you answer the following questions:
How long have you had this fear?
What are your symptoms when you face this fear?
How has it affected your life?
How often do you worry about it?
Do you know why you developed this fear?
Once a diagnosis takes place, treatment begins. You can decide how you get treated. Whether it be medcation or therapy. It's not recommended you live with emetophobia alone.
