Do's and Don't's of interacting with emetophobics. What to say and what not to say.

DON'T -

Laugh or giggle. Anxiety disorders aren't a joke.

DO -

Hug them. Ask them if they would like to talk about it. Ask them how they can help.

DON'T -

Tell them to get over it, force them, pressure them, tell them to calm down, etc. Emetophobia isn't a choice. They can't help that they're struggling.

DO -

Let them know that you're there for them. Of course, when you say this, you have to actually make an effort to be there for them.

DON'T -

Make v*ing sounds or tell v* stories.

DO -

Say nice, encouraging, loving words.

DON'T -

Scare them or tease them with their phobia.

DO -

Comfort them when they feel sick, or when they are anxious or panicking.

DON'T -

Go around and tell everyone.

DO -

Ask the emetophobic for permission before you tell anyone else about their phobia.

DON'T -

Tell them they're going to get sick.

DO -

Tell them that they won't get sick and it's pretty unlikely. (99% of the time emetophobics worry about getting sick, it doesn't happen)

DON'T -

Tell them it's not the end of the world, or that others have it worse.

DO -

Say that you may not understand what they're going through, but you will be there to help and guide them.

DON'T -

Tell them to calm down.

DO -

Be patient, kind, and friendly with them.
